Mary Jo Urschalitz ’49
Mary Jo Urschalitz was described as genuine and as a devout Catholic
who lived her life by the golden rule. She was a lover of music,
nursing and education and pursued topics in each area at The University
of Findlay, then Findlay College.
After graduating from The
University of Findlay, she continued her education and later
became a graduate of Bowling Green State University and the University
of Michigan as well as the St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, and
the former Mary Manse College, both of Toledo.
Mary
Jo proudly served her country during World War II as a member of
the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in Germany. She continued working as a
registered nurse and frequently volunteered her time to visit and care
for the homebound upon her retirement. Her spare time was spent
fulfilling her passion for music. Mary Jo taught piano and
organ lessons to community friends and neighbors. Generously, she often
waived a lesson fee if a student’s money was tight. She also enjoyed
playing tennis and golf.
Mary Jo was a lifelong
member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, where she was an
organist for 15 years. There, she also founded and directed the
Guadalupe Choir, was an Altar Rosary Society member, and served as
Parish Commissioner and chairlady for many events over the years.
She enjoyed supporting her alma mater and attended various
UF equestrian shows and events. Excited to see the University
growing, Mary Jo wished to contribute to its success.
She named UF as a partial beneficiary of her commercial annuity as an
unrestricted estate gift totaling $10,992 to The University of Findlay.
