Keynote Speakers:

Will Moses            Speaking Monday morning, July 13
This artist is the great-grandson of famed artist Grandma Moses. He has illustrated numerous classic children's stories, including Silent Night, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van Winkle, Mother Goose, Hansel and Gretel and The Night Before Christmas. His latest book is Raining Cats and Dogs.

Jan Wahl            Speaking Monday afternoon, July 13
This author, who lives in Toledo, Ohio, has published more than 100 books for children, which have been translated into seven foreign languages.  He has worked with many well known illustrators such as Maurice Sendak, Garth Williams, Erik Blegvad and Mercer Mayer. His books include Magic Heart, Pleasant Fieldmouse, Grandmother Told Me, Jamie's Tiger, The Clumpets Go Sailing and The Furious Flycycle.                            

Raul Colon            Speaking Tuesday morning, July 14
Raul Colon is an acclaimed Latino artist whose work has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, Time Magazine, The New Yorker and The Wall Street Journal.  He has been awarded Silver and Gold medals from The Society of Illustrators in New York City.  He has illustrated many books for children, such as Always My Dad, Grandmother's Garden, Yolanda's Genius and The Snowman's Path.

Keith Graves            Speaking Tuesday morning, July14      
This Texas-based artist is the author and illustrator of many children's picture books, among them Down in the Dumps with the Three Nasty Gnarlies, Loretta: Ace Pinky Scout, Pet Boy, Frank Was a Monster Who Wanted to Dance, Uncle Blubbafink's Seriously Ridiculous Stories and Too Many Frogs!                                   

Peter Brown            Speaking Tuesday morning, July 14   
 
This author/artist studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and has created books such as the fabulously popular Chowder series.  Along with this series, which includes The Fabulous Bounding Chowder, he has also written and illustrated Barkbelly, Snowbone and Flight of the Dodo among many others.   

Bruce Langton            Speaking Wednesday morning, July 15
This Indiana artist's unmistakable style and unique ability to capture not only sporting and wildlife scenes,but also contemporary landscapes in such books as B is for Buckeye: An Ohio Alphabet, Cardinal Numbers: An Ohio Counting Book, Win One for the Gipper: America's Football Hero, V is for Volunteer: A Tennessee Alphabet and H is for Hoosier: An Indiana Alphabet

James Gurney            Speaking Wednesday morning, July 15
James Gurney is an artist known for his plen-air landscape paintings, as well as his award-winning illustrations of fantasy and historical subjects.  His is also known as the author and illustrator of the best-selling illustrated book series, Dinotopia.

This artist was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, but now resides in Berkeley, California.  She has illustrated many books for children, such as Imagine Harry, Little Rabbit and the Night Mare, Trial by Journal, Shall I Knit You a Hat?, Regarding the Bees and Letters from Camp
                                                 
Julie Downing            Speaking Thursday morning, July 16 
This San Francisco artist has illustrated and/or written over 40 books for children. Her innovative approach in illustrating traditional stories appears in The Night Before Christmas, Lullaby and Goodnight and The Firekeeper's Son.  She is most noted for her rich, jewel-like watercolor illustrations.
  
William Low            Speaking Thursday morning, July 16
This artist was born in the Bronx, New York City in the back of a taxicab! Still living in NYC, he has won four Silver medals from the Society of Illustrators and has illustrated many children's books, including Chinatown, Lily, Wake Up, Wilson Street, Good Morning, City, Stargone John and The King, the Princess and the Tinker. 

Stacey Schuett            Speaking Thursday afternoon, July 16
Though she was born in Elmhust, Illinois, this artist now lives in Sebastopol, California. she went to school as a fine artist but "fortunately" was given the chance to illustrate her first children's book shortly after graduation.  Her many books include Pap's Latkes, A Tree Is a Plant, Little Wolf and the Moon, Gorilla Gang, Purple Mountian Majesties, The Christmas Bird, Watermelon Wishes and Outside the Window. 
 
Brian Pinkney            Speaking Friday morning, July 17
This Brooklyn-based artist is a member of the fabulously talented "Pinkney Clan."  His mother and father, Gloria & Jerry Pinkney and brother and siter-in-law, Myles &. Sandra, are well known in the chilren's book world as is his wife, Andrea.  He has created many books using his special scratchboard technique, such as In the Time of the Drums, Duke Ellington, The Faithful Friend, Where Does This Trail Lead? and Bill Pickett: Rodeo Ridin' Cowboy

Grace Lin            Speaking Friday afternoon, July 17
This Boston-based artist and author shares her Asian American heritage in her colorful children's books such as Robert's Snow and Olvina Flies. The books have a fresh folklike quality including Dim Sum for Everyone!, The Year of the Dog, Kite Flying and Okie-dokie, Artichokie! 


REGISTRATION INFORMATION


The Institute fee for the 2009 Mazza Museum Summer Institute is $225.


         This fee entitles you to:
  • Attend all keynote sessions           
  • Five continental breakfasts           
  • Chances to win many door prizes         
  • A special registration gift                   
  • Institute handouts
  • Attend many pullout sessions

Children's Writing Strand:

This year is our third year to include a “Children’s Book Writing Strand.”  A special strand will permeate the conference for those interested in becoming a children’s book author/illustrator.  This strand must be taken for the full five-day conference. If you chose this strand, you must attend all the pullout sessions for this strand and will not be able to attend any other pullouts.

Flexible Registration:

You may chose any or all days of the Conference to attend. Check the artists for a complete schedule and chose which days you want to attend. The fee is below:

All five days           $225
Any four days        $200
Any three days       $170
Any two days        $120
Any one day          $65

Conference space available will accommodate 300 participants.  Registration for the 2009 Mazza  Summer Conference begins February 1, 2009 and closes July 10, 2009, or earlier, if maximum participation limit is reached.  Please register early.

Classroom Credit Hours

Attend the Mazza Museum 2009 Summer Conference
for graduate credit, undergraduate credit or just for fun!

The basic registration fee is waived for those participating in the Conference for graduate or undergraduate credit.

Graduate Credit: 1,2,3,4 or 5 hours of graduate credit are available from The University of Findlay for conference participants at the cost of $460 per credit hour plus a $30 hour service fee.

Undergraduate Credit: 1,2 or 3 hours of graduate credit are available from The University of Findlay for conference participants at the cost of $528 per credit hour plus a $30 hour service fee.

Those taking the conference for credit must attend and complete all requirements:

For 1 hour: must attend for two days and complete syllabus requirements
For 2 hours: must attend for three days and complete syllabus requirements
For 3-5 hours: must attend for five days and complete syllabus requirements

NO REFUNDS AFTER June 1, 2009.  There will be a $20.00 processing fee on all refunds.  Refund checks will be issued after the Conference concludes.
