Keynote Speakers:

Guy Porfirio            Speaking Monday morning, July 12
This artist/illustrator graduated from American Academy of Art. He landed his first job as a illustrator drawing car mufflers for a Chicago agency. Now he lives in Arizona with his wife and children and is living his dream. His books include The Littlest Angel, Papa's Gift, The Day I Could Fly, Junk Man's Daughter, and The Legend of St. Nicholas.

Judith Caseley           Speaking Monday afternoon, July 12
This author/illustrator writes books about feelings that she experienced as a child. She just published her 38th book and still continues to write daily. Her books include Field Day Friday, When Grandpa Came to Stay, Silly Baby, Molly Pink, Apple Pie and Kisses and Mr. Green Peas.
                          

Brian Lies                  Speaking Tuesday morning, July 13
This author/illustrator resides in Massachusetts with his wife and daughter. Some of Brian's hobbies include bicycling, woodworking, and tending to his big vegetable garden behind his house. His books include Bats at the Library, Bats are the Beach, Popcorn, Finklehopper Frog and Deep in the Swamp.

Calef Brown             Speaking Tuesday morning, July13      
This writer/illustrator has not only done children's books but he has also done interior and cover illustrations for Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stones and Sports Illustrated. Some of his books include Soup for Breakfast, Dutch Sneakers and Flea-Keepers, Polka-Bats and Octopus Slacks and Tippintown: A Guided Tour.                                 

Suzanne Bloom            Speaking Tuesday afternoon, July 13   
This writer/illustrator loves writing stories and believes the illustrations are like the dessert to a good book. She resides in upstate New York with her husband, two sons, and her cats and dogs. Some of her books include A Mighty Fine Time Machine, Treasure, A Splendid Friend Indeed and The Bus for Us.  

Patricia Polacco           Speaking Wednesday morning, July 14
This Michigan native author/artist has produced numerous popular children's books; favorites such as Pink and Say, Thank you, Mr. Falker, The Keeping Quilt and My Rotten Red Headed Brother.  Her latest book called January's Sparrow includes her same heartwarming illustrations showcasing her vivid imagination and storytelling ability.

Robert Sabuda            Speaking Wednesday morning, July 14
This writer/illustrator taught himself how to create pop-ups from studying his old pop-up books. Now, he writes, illustrates, and creates paper masterpieces. He currently lives in New York City. Robert's books include The Blizzard's Road, Author and the Sword, The Chronicles of Narnia, The 12 Days of Christmas, America the Beautiful
and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
      
Ian Schoenherr           
Speaking Wednesday afternoon , July 14
Ever since this little one could hold a crayon, he has been drawing. Ian found himself following in his father's footsteps and became an illustrator. He now lives in Woodside, New York in the same house his great-grandparents bought in 1920. Some of his books include Cat & Mouse, Read It, Don't Eat It, Sleepyhead Bear, Marie in Fourth Position and One Night.
                                                 
Brandon Dorman            Speaking Thursday morning, July 15
This artist received his fine arts degree from Brigham Young University in Idaho and currently resides in Puyallup, Washington with his family. Some of his books include Pingo, Santa's Stowaway, The Wizard and Halloween Night.
  
Jackie Urbanovic             Speaking Thursday morning, July 15
When Jackie was little, she would draw and tell stories before she could even read. Her imagination ran wild then and still does today. She finds herself still experimenting with art and likes to try new techniques. Her books include Duck and Cover, Duck Soup, Duck at the Door, Glamsters and The Ten Best Things About My Dad. . 

Carol Heyer                    Speaking Thursday afternoon, July 15
This full time illustrator/writer's favorite genre is fantasy. She stated once, "I love fantasy so completely because these worlds, characters and creatures can be painted anyway that you choose to see them. After all, no one can tell you your dragon is wrong!" Carol's books include The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods, Humphrey's First Christmas, The First Easter and Excalibur.
 
Steve Bjorkman            Speaking Friday morning, July 16
This California illustrator was born in the front seat of a 49' convertible and blames this for his quirky sense of humor. He has illustrated over 70 children's books including The Flyaway Kite, Izzy the Lizzy, A Treasure Beyond Measure, and Guido's Gondola.

Matthew Reinhart          Speaking Friday afternoon, July 16
This artist/illustrator always had a passion for art. When younger, Matthew was known to draw everyday, in and out of school. It was typical for his school notebooks to be filled with more sketches than notes. He now resides in New York City cutting, taping and folding paper into pop-up masterpieces. His books include Star Wars, Jungle Book, Encyclopedia Prehistoria: Mega-Beast, Castle, Mommy? and Cinderella. 


REGISTRATION INFORMATION


The 2010 Mazza Summer Conference registration fee entitles you to:

  • Attend keynote sessions 
  • Attend many pull-out sessions         
  • Continental breakfasts           
  • Chances to win many door prizes 
  • Conference handouts  

Children's Writing Strand:

This year is our fourth year to include a “Children’s Book Writing Strand.”  A special strand will permeate the conference for those interested in becoming a children’s book author/illustrator.  This strand must be taken for the full five-day conference. If you chose this strand, you must attend all the pullout sessions for this strand and will not be able to attend any other pullouts.

Flexible Registration:

You may chose any or all days of the Conference to attend. Check the artists for a complete schedule and chose which days you want to attend. The fee is below:

All five days           $225
Any four days        $200
Any three days      $170
Any two days        $120
Any one day          $65

Conference space available will accommodate 300 participants.  Registration for the 2010 Mazza  Summer Conference begins February 1, 2010 and closes July 10, 2010, or earlier, if maximum participation limit is reached.  Please register early.

Classroom Credit Hours

Attend the Mazza Museum 2010 Summer Conference
for graduate credit, undergraduate credit or just for fun!

The basic registration fee is waived for those participating in the Conference for graduate or undergraduate credit.

Graduate Credit: 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 hours of graduate credit are available from The University of Findlay for conference participants at the cost of $552.

Undergraduate Credit: 1, 2 or 3 hours of graduate credit are available from The University of Findlay for conference participants at the cost of $528 per credit hour plus a $30 hour service fee.

Those taking the conference for credit must attend and complete all requirements:

For 1 hour: must attend for two days and complete syllabus requirements
For 2 hours: must attend for three days and complete syllabus requirements
For 3-5 hours: must attend for five days and complete syllabus requirements

NO REFUNDS AFTER June 1, 2010.  There will be a $20.00 processing fee on all refunds.  Refund checks will be issued after the Conference concludes.

Celebrity Art Auction

The Mazza Museum will hold a Celebrity Art Auction on the evening of Wednesday, July 14, 2010.

Over 100 artworks by Children's Book Illustrators. Art may be view on mazzamuseum.org, February 1, 2010.

The auction will take place in the Alumni Memorial Student Union on The University of Findlay campus.

All art has been generously donated by the respective artists for the benefit of the The Dr. Jerry J. Mallett Institute Endowment Fund. Many thanks to our artists for their support of and belief in our teaching museum.
