history

WLFC-FM is a noncommercial radio station that has been serving the people of Hancock County and Northwest Ohio since 1973. Our format of independent-label rock, University of Findlay sports, and all manner of cool music has made us a must-listen for all in this region who are looking for something different on their radio.

The radio station is owned by The University of Findlay Board of Trustees and operated by the Communication Program within the College of Liberal Arts.

The station was begun by business major Bill Rumbold and religion major Stan Moothart and began operating as WVFC during the spring of 1971. At this point, WVFC was a carrier current station available in some residence halls at 560 AM.

On November 1, 1973 the station became WLFC-FM and operated at a power of 10 watts on 88.3 MHz. On January 23, 1982, WLFC began operating in stereo at 155 watts ERP.

During October 2010, WLFC made the leap to 4,600 watts. Today we cover all or part of 14 northwest and northern Ohio counties, bringing something different to northwest Ohio’s radio mix.

While WLFC is a key part of the communication major, its staff consists of majors, non-majors and assorted campus volunteers.
