The Process: What do you need to get into law school? You want to eventually go to law school, but what does it take to get there? During this session, you will learn all the necessary steps required for being accepted into law school. These steps include selecting the right major, preparing and getting an exceptional LSAT score and participating in extracurriculars that give you an edge.
Best law schools in America Selecting which law schools to submit your application to can be an overwhelming choice. Using rankings and data that determine the “best schools" in America can be helpful, if you know how to interpret them. U.S. World and News Report data is discussed, as well as other rankings to help you get a better idea which law school would be the best fit for you.
Tour of Downtown Findlay Courthouse See the facilities of a functional courthouse and discover the job possibilities available in a courthouse after law school graduation. Courthouse structure, the Socratic method and clinics will be covered.
Exercises: Who gets into law school? & Writing a personal statement Gain insight into what it takes to get into law school and what it means to be a lawyer. In the group exercise, “Who got into law school?" law school applications are reviewed from Ohio State University, Ohio Northern University and University of Minnesota to determine the types of students who are accepted, not accepted and why. In the individual exercise, you will write personal statements required for law school applications and have them reviewed by professionals. You will also have free time in the Ralph and Gladys Koehler Fitness and Recreation Complex, where activities include play ping pong, basketball and pool. There is also a showing of a legal movie, either Paper Chase or Trial of O.J. Simpson, followed by a discussion.
Tips on getting into law school Who better to discuss law school admissions with than directors of admissions from actual law schools? During this session you will receive the best tips and advice for getting into law school from the Ohio Northern University Director of Admissions, University of Toledo Director of Admissions and Chuck Roboski, former assistant dean for admissions, financial aid and communications at Michigan State University College of Law.
Mock Trial The best way to put your legal skills to the test is in a mock trial. Spanning both days of the workshop, you will receive a handout explaining the mock trial exercise and the role of each participant, then conduct a mini-mock trial to prepare you for a larger mock trial at the end of the workshop. For the larger mock trial, there are two hours of preparation time before the final activity of the camp. Awards for best attorney and best witness will be presented at the conclusion of the trial.
