DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, September 23 UF will be hosting the 2026 Dr. & Mrs. DeBow Freed Contemporary Christian Lecture Series at 7:30pm in the AMU Endly Room. \nLecture Title: “Meatpacking America and the Importance of Doing Research in Our Communities” \nSpeaker: Dr. Kristy Nabhan-Warren has been teaching\, researching\, and writing about religions in the United States and U.S.-Mexico borderlands for over 25 years. She is the V.O. and Elizabeth Kahl Figge Chair in Catholic Studies at The University of Iowa and is also the Associate Vice President of Research at Iowa. She is trained as a historian and anthropologist of religion; her classes and scholarship all investigate how everyday people live their faith. While traditional training often focuses on risk and liability\, this workshop shifts the lens toward collective care. We recognize that a clinician’s grief is not a private failing\, but a shared professional reality that requires communal support\, ritual\, and a compassionate “holding space.” This training is designed to move clinicians away from the isolation of “professional shame” and toward a community-based model of recovery and resilience. \nThe training offers a comprehensive overview of suicide postvention – interventions following a suicide that support loss survivors and reduce future suicide risk. Participants will explore the foundations of suicide prevention\, the history and research behind postvention\, and how it differs from other therapeutic approaches after a loss. Discussion will focus on creating a clinical space that is proactive in support from the inside out\, destigmatizes grief after client loss\, and recognizes the importance of human connection. \nObjectives\n\nCultivate a culture of “Low-Impact Debriefing” to support colleagues without causing secondary trauma.\nDeconstruct the myth of the “perfect clinician” and the systemic pressures that lead to professional isolation.\nCo-create a “Postvention Pact” for your practice or agency to ensure no clinician walks through loss alone.
