What is Prior-Prior-Year?

On September 13, 2015, President Obama announced a change in how and when students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Families will be able to begin completing the FAFSA on October 1, rather than January.

This change more closely aligns the financial aid application process with the admission application process. In order to accommodate this earlier filing schedule, the FAFSA will collect income information from two years prior to the academic year for which the aid is intended (Prior-Prior Year) rather than the previous year. The new process begins in October 2016 for the 2017-18 award year.

Why this is important to anyone filing for Federal financial aid:

  • You don't have to wait until March to find out how much financial aid and scholarships you are getting from Findlay.
    • If you file your FAFSA earlier and include the University of Findlay on the list of schools you want to receive your federal aid information, Findlay will send your official financial aid award package within a few weeks of getting your FAFSA.
  • You will have more time to really compare the value of a Findlay education with other schools you are considering.
Check out the diagram below for a visual explanation of this change.
