internship opportunities

Animal science students receive hands-on experience at the Dr. C. Richard Beckett Animal Science Building beginning in their first year.  Students are also encouraged to participate in an internship/co-op to acquire additional hands-on work experience within the animal science industry.  Internships can be set-up for either academic credit or taken for work experience only.  Students should contact the Office of Internships and Placement for additional information.

Animal science/pre-veterinary medicine internships

Our animal science/pre-veterinary medicine students receive unique internship opportunities each year!

Rakuno Gakuen Animal Science Study Tour in Japan

Emilie Blissenbach ('17) and Janelle Wiser ('16) are animal science/pre-veterinary medicine students participating in the Rakuno Gakuen Animal Science Study Tour in Japan summer 2015.

Focus of the internship:
Students experience and learn valuable veterinary skills from current vet students and professors at the Rakuno Gakuen Veterinary College while experiencing the Japanese culture.

What are some things you've learned so far?
"We've performed calf castrations, multiple rectal exams and pregnancy checks on dairy cows, and learned how to properly body score dairy cattle. We have attended lab sessions about opthalmology, oncology and large animal medicine at the veterinary hospital. We have also shadowed multiple surgeries, calf necropsy and attended a class discussion on epidemiology where we constructed working solutions on possible disease outbreaks."

How is this internship unique?
"We have been able to experience what it's like to work in a different culture and we've made so many friendships that will last a lifetime! We've been able to sight-see and experience the Japanese culture and especially love the food! Anyone considering this internship in the future should definitely do it!"

Both Emilie and Janelle work as veterinary assistants outside of their studies here at The University of Findlay.

Emilie plans to attend veterinary school and study companion animal and large animal veterinary medicine.

Janelle is applying to veterinary schools summer 2015 with hopes to work with large and small animals.
