American Chemical Society Webinar - The Periodic Table

7:00 p.m.

February 26, 2019

Martin Lecture Hall

Brewer/Frost Science Center

University of Findlay

One-hundred and fifty years ago, Dmitri Mendeleev first presented his periodic system to the Russian Chemical Society, forever shaping the way we look at the elements. His system, which organized the elements based on atomic weight, valence, and measurable properties, laid the foundation for today’s Periodic Table. In honor of this, The United Nations has declared 2019 to be the International Year of the Periodic Table.

Join Univerity of Findlay students and faculty, the UF Chemistry Club and other local chemistry enthusiasts for an engaging webinar about the creation of the periodic table. During the webinar, you will learn what were the conflicting proposals from around the world for how the elements should be organized and why did our current system rise to the top, how were the most recent, superheavy elements discovered, does the Periodic Table have any more room to grow and much, much more. Participants will receive educational handouts and materials and be entered in raffle prizes. We invite all participants to join us after the webinar for an exclusive showing of "The Cosmic Recipe: Setting the Periodic Table" in the Newhard Planetarium located on the university's campus.

Outline of the Night:

  • Pizza and drinks provided by the local ACS chapter
  • Live stream of American Chemical Society webinar
  • Raffle prizes
  • Planetarium show

The Cosmic Recipe: Setting the Periodic Table

Description provided by show provider, Robert Bonadurer

The famous astronomer Carl Sagan once said: “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.” Though that may sound crazy, Sagan was onto something BIG! Want to know what? Pull up a chair at our Planetarium’s Periodic Table and learn the cosmic recipes that created everything in our world – even us! Discover how the Big Bang cooked up everyday elements such as the calcium in our teeth, the silicon in our smartphones, and even the carbon in our apple pies in our latest production, The Cosmic Recipe!
