​School Counselor Leadership Certificate​

​This certificate program will offer focused professional development in the areas of school process and procedure, instructional design and delivery methods as well as classroom management techniques that might prove beneficial for school counselors who have never had the training or experience in working with school-aged children in a classroom instructional environment. Courses can be used for renewing your license or professional development.


These courses do not have prerequisites and are offered online in an asynchronous format.


​(EDSP 660) Contemporary Practices in P12 School Counseling (offered every fall)

This course introduces students to current issues, trends and practices in professional P12 school counseling. Topics include but are not limited to the role of the school counselor within the school setting, school counselor ethics, instructional design and delivery of the counselin​g curriculum, collaboration with educational colleagues, administrators, parents and community agencies, and other practices specific to each level of school counseling such as scheduling, testing, scholarships and financial aid, counseling of student athletes, and special education and intervention processes. Time will also be devoted to developing an understanding of Ohio's College Credit Plus processes and procedures. For current school counselors, this course reinforces knowledge and skills for effective professional practice at all levels of P12 education.  For students who are not school counselors, this course will give insight into the role school counselors play within P12 schools.


(EDSP 661) School Counselors as Educational Leaders (offered every spring) 

This course explores the role of the school counselor as an educational leader and change agent within P12 schools. Classic as well as contemporary leadership theories will be examined with emphasis placed on the application of concepts in the school setting. Topics include theories of leadership and organizational change, assessment of personal development and capacity for leadership, values and ethics, motivation, power, followership, group dynamics, data and assessment leadership, conflict resolution, and the change process. In developing an understanding of effective leadership, this course will assist school counselors in crafting a personal strategy and approach to becoming an effective educational leader within the school communities in which they serve.


EDSP 662 Career Counseling in P12 Schools (offered every summer)   

This course introduces students to current trends and practices in P12 career counseling. Classic as well as contemporary career development theories and approaches will be examined with emphasis placed on the application of concepts in the P12 scho​ol setting. Topics include career development theories, the role of personality theory in vocational choice and promoting self-awareness in students, career education curriculum, career interest surveys and inventories, career interest resources, Ohio Means Jobs, and philosophy of life and work. This course will assist school counselors in crafting a professional strategy and approach to becoming effective resources for students and parents in the career development process.
