Big personality. Big heart. Big beard.
During Findlay's first 55 years, the University did not have an established mascot.
Oiler existence began as a cartoon character
that first appeared in 1937. What was then Findlay College adopted the Oilers as the school nickname, along with a school mascot named "Ollie" a cartoon character
that resembled a monkey-face with an oil can and fancy shoes.
From 1984 through 2000 there were several versions of a mascot that made an apperance, but none of them stuck. In 2000, a "Design the Mascot Contest" was started by the Athletic Department. This contest described an Oiler as someone who worked on the oil rigs, known for being a little rowdy, having a tough behavior and semi-dirty appearance
. Sarah King, '02, winner of the contest, took all of this into account as she instantly knew what the mascot should look like.
The name Derrick came from an oil derrick, which is another name for an oil rig. The name Derrick the Oiler was quickly born. Sarah then worked on putting a face to the name. Her version of what Derrick looks like has stayed with the University since unveiling the mascot during a midnight madness event on Oct. 17, 2001.

Today, Derrick the Oiler has become an icon for the University. Derrick is in his 16th season
as a spirit leader and goodwill ambassador for
the University of Findlay.
Popular among the Oiler fans and students he is one of
the most animated mascots in Ohio, Derrick is the living spirit of Findlay. Women love him, children adore him, and men wish they could grow a beard like him.
Derrick resides at the University of Findlay. He enjoys fracking - the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks or boreholes so as to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas.
Frequently seen at football and basketball games and wandering around the campus he calls home. Derrick enjoys climbing the rock wall and working out at the Koehler Fitness and Recreation Complex.
Derrick's goals in life are to make fans smile and be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame.
