On-Site Services in the Library

You may use Shafer Library and its resources during regular open hours. The library offers wireless guest access so that you may use your own laptop to search the library’s online databases.

Borrowing Books

Both UF alumni and community patrons have several options to borrow materials from Shafer Library and from other libraries in Ohio.

  • Findlay Alumni Benefits Card- if you have a Findlay Alumni Benefits Card, you may stop at or contact the Borrow & Pickup desk in Shafer Library to get a library barcode. (Check out up to 10 items through Shafer Library and/or OhioLINK).

  • Community Borrower Card- if you need immediate access to books in Shafer Library, you may purchase a community borrower card for $10, good for one year. (Check out up to 10 items).
  • State Library of Ohio - as a citizen of Ohio, you can apply for a free card through the State Library of Ohio. (Check out up to 5 items; see State Library Borrowing Policy.)
  • Public and Out-of-State Libraries- if you live near a public library, find out what services they offer. Public libraries often belong to a larger network of libraries which share resources. Also, out-of-state alumni should inquire what services are offered at their nearest public, college or university library.

Off-Site Access To Article & Specialized Databases

Most of Shafer Library’s databases are subscription services that have strict requirements of usage as defined by their licensing agreements.  Typically only current UF students, faculty, and staff may use them. However, for those who are Ohio residents, you may still have access to some of these or other resources through your public library, your nearest OhioLINK library, or the State Library of Ohio. Here is a select list of resources which are freely available to you electronically.
