Preceptor Information
The University of Findlay Experiential Education program relies on our highly qualified and dedicated preceptors to create quality experiences for our students when they are out on rotations.
Become a Preceptor
If you are interested in becoming a preceptor for our program, click the button below and fill out our preceptor application in a new tab. Enter the code “FINDLAY” when prompted. The Office of Experiential Education will contact you shortly with additional information.
Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) Program
The University of Findlay IPPE program is designed to provide real-life pharmacy practice experiences that correlate with the classroom experiences our students receive. Students complete their hours according to the following schedule. Over the course of the first three professional years, students will spend 300 hours in various pharmacy settings, progressing from community-based practice and elective opportunities to health-system pharmacy.
Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) Program
The University of Findlay has developed a unique APPE training model. In this program, students entering their final year of education are assigned to one of our hub sites for the completion of their required APPEs. Hub sites may be a large health system or a geographic area with several smaller sites working together. Students complete required rotations at their hub site, and they may choose to complete three elective rotations off-site.
Required APPEs include:
- Two ambulatory care/community rotations
- Two general medicine/inpatient pharmacy rotations
- Two special population rotation
“Special population” refers to any population of patients with a specific trait or disease state in common. Examples of special populations students may work with include but are not limited to geriatric patients, pediatric patients and diabetic patients.
Elective APPEs:
Students select three one-month elective rotations in any of the above areas or in other areas specific to their career goals. Elective rotation opportunities may include, but are not limited to management, nuclear medicine, veterinary medicine, medication safety, medical mission trips, and even international pharmacy practice in sites such as Japan, Ireland, or India.
IPPE and APPE Manual
The IPPE Preceptor Manual and APPE Preceptor Manual are each intended to provide preceptors with the tools needed to understand and successfully precept students in the University of Findlay’s College of Pharmacy. The manuals contain a description of our program, program policies (including dress code, absence/tardiness, and harassment policies among others), information on student requirements, and additional preceptor resources.
Preceptor Training
The College of Pharmacy offers a free subscription to the Pharmacist Letter Preceptor Training and Resource program to all Findlay preceptors. This subscription allows preceptors to access preceptor-specific continuing education (home-study courses and live webinar), sample examples of activities, assignments and schedules, grading and evaluation tools, and access to Pharmacist Letter Journal Club (which provides article ideas for journal clubs as well as critiques of those articles).
Current preceptors are highly encouraged to take advantage of the Pharmacist Letter Preceptor Training program.
CORE Elms
CORE Elms is the online software system used by the University of Findlay College of Pharmacy to track and facilitate the experiential education program. CORE Elms is used to: view student schedules, confirm student hours, confirm successful completion of student competency checklists, evaluate student’s professional development, review student evaluations of preceptors, track student absences, tardiness, report incidents to the Office of Experiential Education, and track preceptor training.
