Health Insurance Resources for Students

The University of Findlay does not offer a student health insurance plan but strongly encourages all students to maintain coverage while enrolled. Health insurance helps protect your well-being and reduces financial risk from unexpected medical needs. Some programs (clinical placements, athletics, internships, etc.) may require coverage, and students are responsible for obtaining and maintaining their own insurance.

This page is designed to help you explore your options and find coverage that works best for you!

Students have several ways to obtain health insurance. Your best option will depend on your age, income, employment status, and personal circumstances.

Health Insurance Marketplace plans:

You can apply for a plan that meets Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements through your state’s Health Insurance Marketplace. Options specific to many students are available here: Student Health Plans & Other Options. Options specific to Ohio residents are available here: Ohio Health Insurance. Depending on your situation, you may qualify for additional savings on health insurance through the premium tax credit.

Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP):

Based on your income, you may be eligible for no- or low-cost health coverage through Medicaid or Child Health Plus (CHIP). Information on Medicaid in Ohio – coverage, eligibility, enrollment, and customer support – is available here: Ohio Department of Medicaid.

Catastrophic Plans:

Available through the Marketplace for individuals under 30 who cannot afford other coverage, this option offers a lower monthly premium. It provides protection against major medical costs, but due to its high deductible, you may need to pay significant out-of-pocket expenses before coverage takes effect.

International students studying in the United States should carefully review their healthcare options, as the U.S. healthcare system may differ significantly from their home country.

Understanding U.S. Healthcare

  • The United States does not have a universal healthcare system, and individuals are responsible for their own medical costs.
  • Healthcare services are provided through private providers and insurance systems.
  • Without insurance, even routine or emergency care can be very expensive.
  • Students should not assume insurance from their home country will provide adequate coverage in the United States.

Why Health Insurance Is Important

  • F-1 visa holders are not legally required to maintain health insurance; however, the University of Findlay strongly recommends that students maintain health insurance for their safety and security.
  • Medical treatment in the U.S. can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars per visit, depending on the circumstances and where you go for care.
  • Unexpected illness or injury can create a significant financial burden without coverage.
  • Insurance provides access to necessary medical care, including prescriptions and preventive services.
  • Additional information on healthcare in the United States for international students can be found here.

Health Insurance Terms:

Copayment (Copay): The amount you pay to a healthcare provider at the time you receive services. You may have to pay a copay for each covered visit to your doctor, depending on your plan. Not all plans have a copay.

Deductible: The amount you pay for your healthcare services before your health insurer pays. Example: If your plan has a $2,000 annual deductible, you will be expected to pay the first $2,000 toward your healthcare services. After you reach $2,000, your health insurer will cover the rest of the costs.

Network Provider/In-network Provider:

A healthcare provider who is part of a plan’s network.

Out-of-pocket Cost: Cost you must pay. Out-of-pocket costs vary by plan and each plan has a maximum out of pocket (MOOP) cost. Consult your plan for more information.

Premium: Payments you make to your insurance provider to keep your coverage. The payments are due at certain times.

Subsidies: A health insurance subsidy helps you pay for your health insurance. Subsidies lower your monthly premium.

An additional list of terms can be found here: HealthCare.gov Glossary.

Vision & Dental Coverage:

Both vision and dental plans are available through the Health Insurance Marketplace. You may browse plans in your area here: See Plans. Navigate to “plan details” to determine whether a health plan includes the coverage you require. Please note that while many health plans include vision coverage, dental care is often covered separately. You can search directly for dental plans in the links above.

If you select coverage without vision and/or dental care, many providers offer in-house plans or sliding scales for those without insurance. Contact providers directly for confirmation of available options.
