Student Credential Pathways

Student Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (Student CHMM™)

For undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a career in hazardous materials and environmental management

The Student CHMM credential recognizes students in approved Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, or related programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels who wish to demonstrate their developing knowledge and skills in hazardous materials management. After you graduate with your Student CHMM designation, you can advance to the Associate Hazardous Materials Manager (AHMM™) credential. This AHMM recognizes early-career professionals who have demonstrated foundational expertise in hazardous materials management and environmental compliance — setting them on the path to obtaining the full Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM®) credential. With the CHMM, you are considered an “Environmental Professional” under EPA regulation 40 CFR §312.10 and are recognized for your expertise and the significant impact you make on your community and your country.

Student Associate Safety and Health Manager (Student ASHM™)

The Student ASHM credential recognizes students in approved Environmental, Safety, and Occupational Health (ESOH) programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, students can apply for IHMM’s Associate Safety and Health Manager (ASHM™) credential six months after graduation, and the application fee will be waived. There’s no exam required to earn the ASHM. The ASHM credential is an important steppingstone to IHMM’s accredited CSHM™ certification. Students earning a bachelor’s degree from an approved institution only need to demonstrate two years of experience, instead of four, to sit for the CSHM® exam.
