We are seeking a motivated, hands-on student to bridge the gap between science and the agricultural market. This unique internship blends technical sales, customer discovery, and preliminary laboratory testing.
Your primary mission is to connect with livestock producers and large animal farmers to gather market intelligence. Additionally, you will assist our technical team by coordinating field outreach and executing basic diagnostic assays. This position is ideal for an ambitious student looking to build a career in animal health, veterinary pharmaceuticals, or ag-tech commercialization.
Key Responsibilities:
Customer Discovery & Outreach – Identify, contact, and engage with local large animal farmers (bovine, swine, etc) to schedule market research interviews. Interviews can be done by phone, virtual or in-person.
Lead Generation: Build a database of prospective agricultural clients and veterinary clinics within the region.
Interview Coordination: Conduct structured customer discovery interviews to understand farmer pain points, diagnostic needs, and purchasing behaviors.
Field Sampling & Coordination: Organize logistics for collecting field samples from participating farms for diagnostic validation.
Laboratory Testing: Perform preliminary molecular testing, specifically running PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) assays, on collected field samples while following strict biosafety protocols.
Data Synthesis: Document interview insights and lab results accurately to present actionable findings to the leadership team.
Academic Background: Currently pursuing a degree in Animal Science, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, Biology, Chemistry, or a closely related STEM field.
Large Animal Experience: Must possess a strong, demonstrable background working with large animals or livestock (e.g., farm upbringing, 4-H/FFA involvement, or extensive large animal veterinary clinic experience).
Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and conversational skills; must feel comfortable cold-calling and speaking directly with farmers, producers, and veterinarians.
Technical Aptitude: Basic familiarity with laboratory environments. Prior experience with or exposure to pipetting and PCR workflows is highly advantageous, though training will be provided.
Self-Starter Mentality: Ability to work independently in the field, manage your own schedule, and dual-track sales outreach with scientific tasks.
Travel: Reliable transportation to visit local farms and regional university research hubs as needed.
What You Will Gain:
Direct experience in ag-tech commercialization.
Enhancement of your professional network within the Midwest agricultural and veterinary sectors.
Strong resume builder for veterinary school applications or corporate animal health roles by demonstrating a unique mix of scientific capability and business acumen.
Competitive compensation and flexible hours designed to accommodate a university class schedule.
