Year-by-Year Overviews

Freshmen Year

  • Accommodate new and experienced students
  • Proper body position
  • Lunging
  • Horsemanship and showmanship
  • Trail riding
  • Line driving
  • Flying lead changes
  • Each class has riding, stall cleaning time, and ends with the afternoon feeding

Sophomore Year

  • Assigned an unbroken and untrained colt
  • Round pen work
  • Natural horsemanship
  • Colts are taught to lunge and line-drive
  • Riding colts
  • Sophomores work three weekends each semester and two are paid

Junior Year

  • Begin to specialize in a desired discipline, breed or training level
  • Assigned up to 3 outside horses including a lead changer and a cutter
  • Ride green reiners
  • Train at least one horse on trail obstacles
  • Develop a hunter under saddle horse
  • Demonstrations held on Thursdays

Senior Year

  • Allows for diversity and specialization
  • Assigned two outside horses and a school reining horse
  • Request your school reining horse
  • Break train and show a pleasure futurity horse
  • Prepare horses for the University's annual sale
  • Supervise morning or afternoon feedings
  • Administer medications during your weekend shift
Pursue your passion, work with horses out side the classroom
We are one of the only universities in the U.S. that has cattle for cutting on grounds in the western program for students.
