About the Program
The University of Findlay’s Japanese program prepares students to communicate effectively in Japanese while gaining a deep understanding of the culture, society, and global impact of Japan. Designed for students interested in using language skills in a wide range of careers, the program emphasizes practical communication, cultural immersion, and real-world application.
Students can pursue a bachelor’s degree in Japanese, a multi-age (K–12) teaching licensure program, or a minor, allowing flexibility based on career goals. Instruction focuses on developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through interactive coursework and hands-on experiences both inside and outside the classroom. With strong connections to Japanese institutions, businesses, and the local Japanese community, students have opportunities to study abroad, complete internships, and engage with native speakers. Graduates leave the program prepared to use Japanese as a professional skill in global and multicultural environments.

Course Requirements
Students earning a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese must complete the following curriculum.

opportunities
Hands-On Experience
Our program emphasizes the functional and practical use of the language as well as Japanese culture. You will be immersed in the language with lessons both inside and outside of the classroom.
You will practice your Japanese language skills:
- In class
- During on-campus activities with Japanese students
- Through activities with the Findlay area Japanese community members
- During study abroad and internship programs in Japan (short visits or up to a year)
There are approximately 350 Japanese speakers in the Findlay area, and you will have opportunities to interact with them. We also have strong ties with Japan. We are affiliated with several Japanese universities, companies, and language schools. Every semester, you will find some of our students studying and/or working in Japan.

The Japanese Culture Club gives students the opportunity to explore Japanese language, traditions, and contemporary culture through interactive activities, events, and community engagement. Open to students of all backgrounds and experience levels, the club creates a welcoming space to build cultural understanding and connect with others who share an interest in Japan.
